Northern Lights Strain Background

Today we are doing a Northern Lights Strain Review.

As many on you may know we are big fans of Super Silver Haze and Northern Lights is one of the parent strains. I first tried this strain in Amsterdam around 2010. Actually tried this a little after trying Super Silver Haze which I totally loved. Since I loved Super Silver Haze so much it was suggested to me to try Northern Lights which Super Silver Haze is partially derived from. This strain is one of the most famous cannabis strains of all time.

According to legend the Northern Lights strain began on an island near Seattle Washington. The genetics Northern Lights propagated from are the indigenous Afghani landrace strains. These strains are cherished for their highly resinous buds, fast flowering, and resilience during growth.

Northern Lights then made it’s way to Holland around 1985. Once there Nevil Schoenmaker who had recently founded The Seed Bank started to breed the orignal strain. From here the lingeage gets a bit blurry as the cannabis plants were selectively bred and backcrossed. Some Northern Lights phenotypes were bred with varieties like Thai sativas, but others were left to carry on the pure indica genetics. Sensi Seeds bought The Seed Bank in the early 90’s and have been propagating the Northern Lights family line ever since.

Today the once 100% pure Indica strain can now be found in several genetic variations, some of which even express sativa-like characteristics.

Northern Lights has won countless cannabis awards worldwide.  It’s genetics have provided the foundation for many of today’s most popular strains. Such as White Widow, Chronic, Super Silver Haze, Special Kush, and many more. Keep reading to get a better insight on this truly legendary cannabis strain.

Appearance

First thing we notice taking out of the jar is the Northern Lights buds are very packed and closely formed together. No big leaves protruding so this batch was trimmed very well. Just looking at the buds one can tell it’s got some great heritage and genetics. I am falling in love just looking at this thing.

As mentioned previously Northern Lights buds are pretty densely packed. It has thick and prominently displayed sugar leaves that protrude slightly outwards. These leaves are I would say a dark olive green shade. You can also see streaks of purrple and blue running through them as well. Kinda of like watching the actually Northern Lights in action. Most likely were they got then name from.

The deep orange pistils blend in perfectly with the the sugar leaves. The water leaves are usually a darker shade of green and can have deep blue traces on the tips of the leaves.

Overall impression of the appearance is that it’s just a very beautiful plant and you can tell just by looking at it that it should be good.

Smell

To me Northern Lights has a very distinct smell. I got a sort of lovely earthen smell that just built up in my nostrils. It’s not overpowering either, Northern Lights is not one of those strains you can smell a mile away. It just doesn’t smack you in the nostrils, like some of the other cannabis strains up in smelling and sampling.

It’s worth noting that there are several phenotypes of Northern Lights on the market like any cannabis strai. As a result there’s going to be different varieties and they’re going to be slightly different from each other.

When ground up I got some slightly different scents. I got some pungent smeels that immmediately hit your nose. Kinda of like the smell of dark ganja but with some other notes in their as well.

As well as the pungent smell I got some sweet and spicy notes that blends in with a hint of lime. Some have even reporting a bit of an ammonia smell to this strain but I didn’t with this experience. With all the diffent scents this makes for a pretty invigorating smelling strain.

Taste

Now for the best part of the review.

The main flavor was as expected which is quite earthy. There wasn’t a overpowering flavor when I hit the bong especially considering the amount that I used. I filled up this bowl and packed it down tight as I could.

Upon first taste the earth like flavor can be definitely felt. But soon that flavor blends into something more complicated. You start getting a sweet flavor which make for an absolute dynamite combination. This makes it perfect for late night smokes.

I guess I could say that the flavor of Northern Lights is skunky and full bodied without being overpowering. There are pine and earthy flavors mixed with a little bit of sweetness. You can also taste traces of lemon that can leave a sweet dank taste in your mouth afterwards.

Northern Lights flavor is top notch and won’t dissapoint even spoiled cannabis connoisseurs. This strain blends earthy flavours with notes of pine and delicious sweetness for an awesome old-school flavor that has become increasely hard to find these days.

Effects

After a few minutes of smoking Northern Lights I am starting feeling the Indica. I am feeling so relaxed. I am just feeling no stress whatsoever even though I have had a really busy week. Not only did I feel super relaxed but had nice bout of euphoria as well. Definitely one of the reasons this strain is still a favorite among cannabis lovers everywhere!

With typical THC amounts 18% or higher Northern Lights gives a strong but not overwhelming relaxation from head to toe. Medical users find Northern Lights great due to its balanced effects. This strain can help with pain relief, soothing sore muscles, and offering relief from insomnia. Due to it’s relaxing and happy effect Northern Lights can help with anxiety and other mood disorders.

Northern Lights has been known to induce induce happiness and plenty of smiling with it’s users. Some users even report light psychoactive effects that essentially place a hazy glow that cause life to appear more vibrant.

This cannabis strain has dreamy and euphoric effects. It often sends users into a blissful, altered reality. Due to it’s full body effect it’s best for most users to consume Northern Lights during the evening time to fully enjoy it’s potent indica qualities.

Northern Lights Strain Review Summary

This is a great strain people. It’s one of my favorites for sure and I enjoy most the strains derived from Northern Lights as well.

Even the appearance and smell are very lovely. Not too much wrong with this strain at all. There is a reason this has been one of the most popular cannabis strains of all time. It’s won plenty of awards worldwide and is must try for any cannabis lover.

The taste of Northern Lights is phenomenal. It can probably be best summarized as piney and earthy with a hint of lemon at the end. Even has a certain sweetness that makes for just a powerful flavor profile with nothing to overwhelming.

Northern Lights strain effects are probably the best of it’s traits. You get a nice relaxed feeling mixed with eurphoria. It’s a nice balance where it doesn’t relax you to the point where you are stuck on the couch. It’s still probably best experienced at night since it could relax some users too much during the day.
